The Adventures of the Heart is a selected work among Gao Changhong’s earlywritings which was created between1923and1924and first seen most in theweekly magazine of Hurricane chiefly edited by Gao Changhong and Wilderness inthe charge of Lu Xun. Later The Adventures of the Heart was selected andcompiled by Lu Xun and then published by Bei Xin Press in Beijing. This thesis isdivided into three parts:The first part mainly discusses about the historical background and theaccumulation of personal emotions for Gao Changhong’s composition of TheAdventures of the Heart. This part analyzes the impact of the May Fourth NewCulture Movement on Gao Changhong’s ideal of life and his aspiration in literature,explores the relations in the literary field insinuated by Bei Xin Press and GuangHua Press which initially published the book, and also introduces the influence ofthe Hurricane Society and the Wilderness Society on the creation of this book.The second part researches into the literary value of this book fromperspectives of its ideas and artistic features, with an emphasis on the spirit of“bearing” and “localness”, the pursuit of love and the modern western techniquesincluding symbolism, stream of consciousness etc. In a word, this part affirms thatThe Adventures of the Heart, as a masterpiece in the1920s, is of epoch-makingvalue.The third part studies the significance of Gao Changhong and his book in theliterary history. With the further opening up and development of the academic fieldin the new era, the studies of Gao Changhong are more and more fair and impartial,and the value of The Adventures of the Heart in idea and artistry is getting morerecognition.
