As we know, the reform has been enforced in the field of language teaching in recentyears. The focus of college English teaching has been transferred from the teacher-centeredclassroom instructions to the student-centered autonomous learning. The new autonomouslearning model has brought great challenges to both teachers and students. Therefore, it ishigh time that teachers should train students with some learning strategies so that they arekeen on new learning model and actively participate in college English study in self-accesslearning environment. In this research, altogether120sophomores of non-English majors from two classesare selected for this experiment. All of them are attending autonomous English listeningclasses in language labs; one class is elected as experimental group and provided with aone-term systematic training of meta-cognitive strategies while the other is the controlgroup with traditional teaching mode. Before experiment, both experimental group andcontrol group participate in one pretest with the same test paper (Listening Comprehensionof CET-4, June2011). After pretest, they attend two questionnaires surveys onmeta-cognitive strategies and autonomous listening. During the experiment, the teachersintegrate the training of meta-cognitive strategies into listening courses step by step. At theend of semester, the two groups are tested with same posttest paper (ListeningComprehension of CET-4, Dec.2011) and then complete two questionnaires surveys for thesecond time. There are three major research findings:(1) meta-cognitive strategy training canarouse students’ awareness of strategy use and improve their learning efficiency;(2) thetraining can improve students’ autonomous listening ability.(3) Meta-cognitive strategycan assist students in becoming the real owners of their learning and lay a solid foundationfor lifetime learning. Furthermore, the research will answer the following two questions:(1) As to the use of meta-cognitive strategy, what are the differences between theexperimental group and the control group?(2) What the teachers and students should do to improve students’ autonomouslistening proficiency in Agricultural University of Hebei?...
