Saul Bellow is regarded as the most important Jewish American novelist in succession to E. Hemingway and W. Faulkner. His works with the color of the Jewish culture help him win the great status in the contemporary American literature. In1976, Bellow won the Noble Prize for "the human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture".Most of the Saul Bellow researches focus on the family and religious, traditional Jewish culture which Bellow emphasizes in his works. The research of Saul Bellow began from the1980s in China, including monographs, doctoral dissertations, master thesis and Journal Articles. Most of the critics pay their attentions to Bellow’s novels, and his short stories don’t get enough attention that they deserve.Saul Bellow has made some innovations of the narrative forms in his short stories. Using film techniques to express his themes is one of these innovations. In his short stories, he mainly expresses two themes:search and recall. The film techniques multi usage of lens, the montage technique and visual images are used in his short stories to express the two main themes. This thesis aims to demonstrate the film techniques used in Saul Bellow’s short stories and find out how these techniques help him express his topic of search and recall in his short stories.
