Compared with the previous novels, Saul Bellow is mainly concentrated on the creationof short stories in his late period.This paper selects in his late period Bellow’s threerepresentative short stories to analyze the text and figure, and undertake comparative studywith his early works, to explore the thought transformation and deepen understanding ofBellow’s works.This paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter by invoking interviews,biographical information of Bellow, as well as the combination of specific work,“TheBellarosa Connection” with the way of compared their previous works, as a Jewish writerBellow in the turning point of the cultural position and value orientation changes, andexplores the contradictions and integration of Jewish immigrants in the impact of Americanculture.In the second chapter, through a combination of works “Cousins” of ancient Jewishtraditional recall, shows the Jewish immigrants’ confusion of contemporary America;anddiscuss the deep-seated reasons of the depressive style and the orphans temperament inBellow’s works.In the third chapter, by contacting the counter-culture movement of the sixtiesand seventies of the United States and by the philosophy of the concept of nihilism, analysisJewish immigrants encountered confusion and spiritual crisis of contemporary:Theyindifference to Jewish virtues, following the American popular culture blindness."Find" as thetheme of these issues were more explored in Saul Bellow’s short stories of late period,byrecall the historical memory of the main characters, the original relics of the ancient language,the pure original relics, finding the human race most of truethe existence. The main charactersof Bellow’s works finally back to reality, the meaning of affection and love of secular life.In short, this thesis seeks to do an in-depth study of the thinking subject of short storiesin Saul Bellow’s late period, at the same time, to provide some new ideas and inspiration ofshort stories in Saul Bellow’s late period.
