Ian McEwan’s novel Enduring Love explores the interaction between threeideals, namely Rationality, Romanticism and Religion. The three protagonists’ lovetriangle presents the contrast and conflict of three perspectives-“love as biology”,“love as emotion” and “love as faith”. This thesis aims to define the different imageschema of their cognitive development and how their perceptions of each other shapethe complicated character relationship. Their endurance of psychological dilemma andemotional tension is finally reconciled to a love that endures, which signifies theharmonious coexistence of science, literature and religion despite their historicaldispute in human society. |
