Habitus-field And Reception: Howard Goldblatt’s Choice And Translation Strategies On Translating Notes Of A Desolate Man

In recent years, Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological works have been widelyincorporated into translation studies. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notions of field andhabitus, this thesis will contextualize the translation of a Taiwan novel Huangrenshouji by Chu Ti’en-wen. The English version Notes of a Desolate Man is renderedby Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin.The micro-structural analysis will be conducted by a close reading andcomparison of the original novel and translation, in which the specific translationstrategies adopted in the transcription are analyzed in order to examine the influenceof Howard Goldblatt’s habituses and the patron, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation forInternational Scholarly Exchange. The reception of the rendition will be examined.This thesis will go through the translation practices of Chinese literature from Taiwanto see how the literary field of C-E translation in US exerts an influence on thepromotion and reception of them.
