Howard Goldblatt is a renowned translator of modern and contemporary Chineseliterature, who has recently come under the public spotlight due to his authority andsuccess in translation as Chinese writer Mo Yan won the2012Nobel Prize inLiterature. This thesis selects Crystal Boys and Notes of a Desolate Man, two novelsrevolving around a similar theme, as the object of study due to their intriguing culturalconnotations and neglect of research from the perspective of translation studies.After a comparative study of Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Crystal Boys andNotes of a Desolate Man from the aspects of stylistic variations and cultural features,this thesis endeavors to explore Goldblatt’s flexible and fluent translation strategiesand the achievements he has scored by way of a detailed analysis of specifictranslation examples. Goldblatt’s cultural identity and the reasons for his employmentof such strategies are probed into with the intention of offering certain inspiration forthe overseas dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature.
