Through hundreds’years of development, watercolor painting has formed its own unique and rich art language. The perfection of art language is mainly expressed by the improving tool materials, new formation of aesthetic concept and the diversity of techniques. Watercolor painting is especially strict with techniques. A painter without the mastering of the techniques can not paint what he wants. Just like what French sculptor Rodin once said,"No doubt that technique is just a mean, but an artist with ignorance of it can never reach its target with emotions expressed." From another perspective, it should be noted that techniques are means but not ends; they are for the service of the content. Therefore, in terms of painting creation, not only the skilled techniques should be needed, but also the national spirit and modern spirit in accordance with the theme and thought should be concerned. The application of techniques should be guided by the aesthetic concept; theme and content can be highlighted; the inner spirit pursuit can be fulfilled.Good techniques can be great help for the painting work. This thesis is focused on the artistic sprit of the watercolor painting techniques, which is divided into three parts:firstly, a brief review of watercolor painting’s researches is given; secondly, the definition of watercolor painting, different styles of techniques and the basic characteristics are introduced; the last is the central part of this paper. The last part discusses the image, innovative and aesthetic of the techiniques. Finally, the individual’s practice and result is discussed. In a time with the new materials, new techniques and new aesthetic concept appeared, this thesis is for the expectation of the improving of the artistic of the technique expression, changing of the traditional subordinate status, further improving the skills and artistic qualities.
