Translation is translating meaning, and meaning is restricted by context, therefore, it is necessary to handle translating in context. Context plays an important role in language expression and language translation. In recent years, people have done research on the influence of context on language expression and translation from different perspectives. The relationship between space-time of context and translation studied in this paper is on the basis of the theory of three-dimensional space-time of translation context. At the same time, the word "fengliu" often appears in Hong Lou Meng and is expressed differently according to Yang Hsien-yi and David Hawks’editions, which will be the starting point of this thesis. Then it is going to make a deep analysis of the concept of translation concept from the reflection of the word "fengliu". The era, country, cultural background and target readers of these two translators are different, which is the cause for the divergent translation methods they had taken during their translation process. On one side, domesticating strategy enables the final translation production be well received by the public, easy for the wide spread of culture. On the other side, foreignizing strategy is useful for preserving the essence of Chinese culture embodied in this novel which can be appreciated and enjoyed by western world. This thesis first discusses the definition, composition, and individuality of translation context. The translation context is defined in this thesis as the sum of linguistic and cultural interaction brought onto the translation desk by the translator. Like the context of ordinary language uses, it consists of four hierarchical layers of contexts, i.e., the context of langue, the context of parole, the context of situation, and the context of culture. It involves both source language/culture and target language/culture, and even the language/culture of translator when he comes from a language community other than source and target languages. Then the classification of space-time of translation has been focused next. Translation context is divided into natural space-time, social time-space and psychological space. In the second chapter, perspective is transferred into the origin of "fengliu" and the understanding and interpretation of other scholars and literary theorists in the history. Then next chapter makes a list of typical examples of "fengliu" in the novel and the specific translation of Yang and Hawks to go on a preliminary analysis. The relationship between natural, social and psychological space-time of translation context and expression of "fengliu" is the core in this thesis. The author concludes that different space-time leads to different expressions of "fengliu" after analyzing some typical expressions with three-dimensional thinking mode. Differences restrict methods of translation. Techniques such as foreignization and domestication are used when there are differences in time and space between different translators. At the same time, this thesis also makes an explanation for their choice of different translation strategies from the analysis of their cultural background, translation aim and horizon as well as knowledge. In conclusion, it is a new perspective to study expression from the aspect of three-dimensional space-time of translation context which can help people better understand and recognize the influence of context on expression. The discussion of word "fengliu" in Hong Lou Meng from the perspective of three-dimensional space-time of translation context brings a new parameter for the English translation studies of Hong Lou Meng.
