In the current context of national cultural and theoretical confidence, the construction of Chinese-specific translation theories is of utmost importance.Accordingly, the construction of Chinese-specific translation theory based on traditional Chinese theories and intellectual discourse resources has become a significant academic concern. To capitalize on this possibility, this dissertation focuses on Fu Lei’s orientation to Shensi in translation and conducts an extensive construction based on its theoretical sources. As a remarkable translator whose translations and thoughts remain immensely influential in contemporary China,Fu Lei’s orientation to Shensi is considered by Luo Xinzhang as one of the four fundamental concepts in traditional Chinese translation system.Nonetheless, his Shensi in translation generally lacks systematicity and therefore should be strengthened in terms of its theoretical nature. In this regard, this dissertation provides a new research perspective for Fu Lei’s orientation to Shensi, improving its systematicity through the three-dimensional construction and making it more compatible to contemporary theoretical concepts.Due to the fact that both domestic and oversea studies on Fu Lei’s Shensi are primarily limited to its generalization, this dissertation, based on traditional Chinese discourse resources, explores its theoretical sources from traditional Chinese painting, music and calligraphy theories. In addition,an extensive systematic construction of Shensi is developed in terms of linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions. To this end, this dissertation examines Hawkes’ English translation of Hong Lou Meng to elaborate how translators regenerate Shen in each of the aforementioned three dimensions, therefore confirming that Fu Lei’s orientation to Shensi can be realized in the three dimensions and thus strengthening its systematicity. As a result, the three-dimensional Shensi in translation is presented with a more systematic approach than ever before, which is conducive to its theoretical modernization in the current context and contributes to the future improvement and development of traditional Chinese translation discourses.
