History tells us that art and culture develop side by side, the design and s&t progress shoulder to shoulder. The creation of an art form cannot be separated from its breeding cultural soil. Formation of different design style is also influenced by scientific and technological level. Books are most closely associated with culture, its evolution and design to some extent driven by the scientific and technological development. Reviewing the history of books, the resplendent history of ancient civilization led to the birth of books, and the development of science and technology boosted the design of book. A major scientific and technological invention is often followed by a series of related design innovations.Modern book design is a kind of comprehensive and integrated design, comprising of the design before printing, material selection during printing and bookbinding after printing etc. All these efforts require the participation of technologies and techniques. The different materials make different texture; different processes create different binding forms. With the variety of design tools, the richness of the material and innovation of technology and techniques, brilliant achievements of the book design have been made in the current world. Technology is a powerful motor of book design; art and technology together make books design more human.This paper comprises of four chapters, discussing the impact of scientific and technological innovation on the book design. The Introduction describes the meaning of scientific and technological innovation, introduces the scope of design books, provides the research content of this paper, states the study method, sums up the significance of this research. Chapter Two reviews the history of generation and evolution of the book. Since ancient times, the books have had many morphology, including oracle bones, bambooslips, paper manuscripts, printed copies, modern beautiful books, CDs, e-books. The development of books is a microcosm of the progress of human civilization. From East to West, both ancient and modern books have three common elements:design, materials and workmanship. The innovation of design methods, material quality, and technology and technique, is inseparable from the development of science and technology. Chapter Three is the main part of this paper, elaborating the impetus of science and technology on book design from multi-perspectives, discussing the influence of S&T on the various elements of book design. With the he richness of the material, the improvement of printing technology and the participation of computer technology, book design has changed in many ways. Chapter four, the last section of this paper, imagines the future of book design. With the emergence of Concept-book, the participation of E-book, the ties between book design and s&t development will be more close. With the change of life-style, book design will require more innovation. The diversity of book morphology will invent the future of book design.Multi-dimensional development of technology, will give multi-faceted technical support to book design, but also bring some inspiration and revelation with the innovative concepts. The prosperity of book design also accelerates the deposit of knowledge and the spread of information, which in verse provides a fertile breeding soil for s&t innovation, both promoting mutually. At present, the impact of digital media lashes wave by wave. Analyzing and exploring the s&t elements in book design, will have important theoretical value and practical significance to the development of book design.
