The First Wives Club, which was written by American best-selling author OliviaGoldsmith, was published in1992. The book creates a convincing emotional atmosphere andgoes with a strong feminist color, so it has been getting good comments. Annie, Brenda andElise, who are in their fifties, establish the First Wives Club to unite together and to strive fortheir rights, after they experience their sorrow and anger brought by their divorce. At last, thefirst wives gain their equal rights with men and make their husbands get the punishment thatthey deserve. The thesis deeply analyzes the first wives experience and systematicallyexplains the feminist ideas in the book to help everyone learn what on earth is touching in thebook. The thesis mainly analyze three points from the view of women’s unite and joint efforts.They include women’s pursuit of equality between men and women, women’s independenceand freedom. There are three parts in the thesis: the introduction, the main body and theconclusion. In the introduction the thesis states the book The First Wives Club and the socialreviews it has got, as well as the author and her main works. Then follow the literature reviewwhich states the study of the book in China and other countries and the main introduction offeminism. There are four chapters in the main body of the thesis. The first chapter introducesthe first wives’ awakening of feminist consciousness from their reflection on their roles in thesociety and family life and their rebellious thought and action. The second chapter analyzeshow the first wives pursue their equality of economy and social status. The third chapteranalyzes how they pursue economic and spiritual independence. The fourth chapter analyzeshow they pursue freedom in their love and work. The conclusion sums up the viewpoints ofthe thesis—women should unite all the possible force and employ rational and legal means tounflaggingly pursue gender equality and independence and freedom.
