In recent years, with the wide application of the communicative teaching approach in English classes, English teachers begin to discard their traditional teaching method which is named "cramming" and teacher-centered; they are trying to adopt interactive teaching approach to give students more opportunities to use English in classes. With the improvement of teachers’teaching approach, people notice that multimedia instruments have entered language classes at the same time. But which teaching approach is more effective, multimedia teaching and interactive teaching and how to make a best choice so as to improve teaching and learning efficiency have now been what educators are mainly concerned with. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the effects on productive vocabulary of the two teaching methods. The subjects are non-English-majors who are sophomores of East China University of Science and Technology. The experiment adopts both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Quantitative includes pretest, immediate test, delayed test one, delayed test two. With the help of SPSS, the author of this paper uses independent sample t-test to check if there are some significant differences in the output. At the end of the paper, based the data analysis, some findings have been found. Qualitative research is in the form of questionnaires. It is designed as a complement for the quantitative research, in order that a comprehensive knowledge of the subjects could be obtained. Through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the author finds that the effect on productive vocabulary of pure multimedia teaching is worse than interactive teaching, while the combination of the two teaching approaches is the best of the three; interactive teaching approach is effective in improving productive vocabulary, but it is best functioned when combined with multimedia teaching approach.
