Listening is not merely the process of a unidirectional receiving of audible symbols, but an interactive process and indispensable link of normal language communication. In the era of communicative language teaching, listening is getting more and more important in English teaching and learning. Therefore, how to enhance listening comprehension and thereby to improve the communicative competence is what every English teacher and learner should be concerned about. The traditional teaching of listening focuses on the language input and neglects the function of output activities such as speaking. However, the Interactive Approach emphasizes interaction of various aspects: teacher-student interaction, student-student interaction and student-materials interaction, etc. It regards interaction as the key to teaching language for communication, advocates motivating the learners'intrinsic motivation, and stresses the conversion of input into intake through interaction. An experimental study is conducted to investigate the effect of Interactive Approach on the improvement of listening comprehension and communicative competence. The subjects in this study are 102 second-year non-English majors selected from a college in Changchun. They are divided into the experimental group and the control group and are given pretests and posttests before and after the experiment. The data collected are analyzed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the statistical analysis show that compared with the traditional approach, the Interactive Approach is more beneficial for the improvement of the learners'listening comprehension and communicative competence.Although the success of this study has shown the significance of Interactive Approach in the field of listening teaching and learning, it still has some possible areas for improvement. The development and application of interactive multimedia listening software should be particularly emphasized for the future research. The author wants to provide some suggestions for other teachers or learners through his own study and wishes that this study will serve as a trailbreaker for the great prosperity of further research in this field.
