Research On Artistic Style Of Figure Paintings By Ren Bonian

Ren Bonian, one of the founders of the "pre-Shanghai school", specializes in landscape painting, lower-bird painting, and figure painting, and especially his figure painting makes him the master in modeling, composition, and artistic conception fields.In this paper, I have consulted many historical materials to find out the contributions to Ren’s artistic style in his figure paintings. The analysis contains the beginning of his figure painting career, the influence from the hundred schools of thought on him, and his absorption from the folk art and western paintings, to illustrate the procedure of his own artistic style. By the multifaceted analysis of Ren’s artistic style, including his distinct characteristics of the era, his variety of painting subjects, and his painting language, we can find the right way to inherit his painting style and deliberate how to innovate this style; meanwhile, we can deeply experience his ability to combine the Chinese painting skills with the western painting skills, and then to provide the theoretical basis in this field.From what has been analyzed in this paper, we may draw the conclusion that Ren Bonian raised the Chinese traditional figure painting to a new level---his figure painting art is the symbol that the Chinese traditional figure painting has transited into the modern figure painting. His article achievement directly influenced the development of the Chinese modern figure painting. Mustard Seed Garden houses all kinds of paintings of Ren, and it plays as the "painting model" for many following scholars, and many art masters have learnt so much from it in their early years, and then forming their own artistic features. Therefore, there are is practical significance to study Ren’s figure paintingThe creation in this paper is to experience the perfect combination between the intrinsic value and extrinsic technique in Chinese painting, focusing on the study of Ren’s artistic features and article achievement, to extend the appreciation of the inheritance of and innovation to the traditional Chinese painting.
