As an intrinsic attribute of natural language, vagueness has evoked increasing attention and endeavor from many scholars both from China and the Western countries. Legal language is a specific form of natural language, for which is not easy to escape from the essential property of being vague.On the basis of the theory on pragmatic vagueness, taking the English version of Contract Law of People s Republic of China as the corpus, this thesis first briefly reviews the relevant studies on this field of many scholars abroad and at home. Then the thesis calculates and analyzes the vagueness appearing in Contract Law according to the lexical level and technical terms, and reveals the positive functions of these vague expressions. At last, this thesis sums up the causes of the existence of these vague expressions in Contract Law of People’s Republic of China.The significance of this thesis is to analyze the vague expressions in legal documents from linguistic point of view, and to make people have a correct understanding of the usage of vagueness in Contract Law, as well as the functions of it. At the same time, it is also hoped to provide implication for the analysis on vagueness in other kinds of documents.
