Being a common type of language behavior in human being’s society, humor plays an essential role in human life, especially in communication. What the paper will discuss is about the mental mechanism in the process of understanding verbal humor and the effect of metonymy in the humor generation. That is to say, we will focus on the mental activities for the hearer when comprehending the meaning of humor, because if the humor can not be understood or comprehended well by hearer, it will be meaningless. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary whether the hearer could get the humor meaning and comprehend and appreciate the verbal humor.However, it involves many factors to study the generation mechanism of humor meaning. The thesis will analyze the cognitive mechanism of metonymy in the process of humor generation, based on some cognitive theories, such as frame-shifting theory, blended mental space theory.
