Abstract/Summary:
In the history of modern Chinese literature,as the master of Chinese new-poetryschool, Mu Dan can be regarded as the best Chinese young poet in the1940s. Thepoetry creation which had been made in his last years during the mid70s isconsidered as an important part of contemporary literature and the best in the Culturalrevolution potential writing. Mu Dan’s poetry creation at that time has a style of itsown and a independence which is different from not only the other poets’works in thesame age but also the poems in his golden years. This essay analyzes Mu Dan’spoetry creation in his later years in two respects. Part one discovers the subject of thepoems. It starts with Mu Dan’s life history in1970s and discusses the thickconsciousness of death then. We think that the premonition and the anxiety of deathare the backgrounds and the mental motivation of his later years’creation. Then thisessay classifies the poems’theme in two cases: looking back and summarizing theinside life course;having insight into and criticizing the outside social history.Theformer theme is full of contradictions and struggles in his elderly mind while the lattermanifest more of the strength of suspicion and speculation. Part two summarizes theartistic features of his poems from three levels——structure, aesthetics and language.It describes the tensile structure of the binary opposition, the aesthetic consciousnessof elegant decadence and the flexibility and obstruction of the poetry language.
