With the development of China’s economy, people have more leisure time thanever before. And due to the impact of the current trend of globalization, the globalcultural exchanges have gradually thriving and prosperous. A growing number ofBritish and American films, as carrier of culture, flush into the Chinese market and isloved by the majority of the audience. In order to make the Chinese audienceunderstand foreign meaning of the film, there are different methods. In addition to thefilm and television works to voice, is also a common way for the subtitle translation.Even young people prefer to watch movies instead of dubbing films. Film subtitlestranslation is a new generation in the field of translation, thus, more and more expertsand scholars have devoted their energies to study it and achieved good results. Interms of translation theory, film subtitle translation of Europe has been studied formany years and has been made certain achievements in the theory and practice of.However, our country in the theoretical study of subtitle translation is relativelylagging behind.This paper is formed from the functionalist translation theory as the guide tostudy the film subtitle translation. Subtitle translation is a purposeful activity, mainlyto convey the information of the film and television works, which make it easy forthe audience in specific living environment to understand. Each movie has its specificpurpose, therefore, subtitle translation should follow certain principles and adopt theappropriate translation strategy. In the translation process, the translator should alsogive attention to the cultural phenomenon.With the application of functional theories of translation in the subtitletranslation in it, the author chooses the selection of a film "the Green Hornet" as a case study. The film is a commercial one, as well as a comedy movie. Its mainpurpose is to attract more audience to enjoy it and to win more business value.According to this purpose, subtitle translation uses a variety of translation strategies toensure the legibility and coherence of the subtitles, such as additional translation,literal translation and free translation.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is mainly on theresearch background, research questions and introduces the structure. The secondchapter reviews the history and development of the subtitle translation theory,focusing on the contributions in the field made by both domestic and foreign scholars.The third chapter analyzes the emergence and development of the functionaltranslation theory and focuses on the important position and function on how to applytheory to subtitle translation. The fourth chapter uses "the Green Hornet" as anexample and focuses on the use of translation strategies in the case. The fifth chapteris the conclusion part.The foundation of study the film subtitle translation is from the perspectiveof functionalist translation theory. Translation strategies are the main points that thepaper focus. I hope this study can help improve the application of functionalisttranslation theory of movie subtitles, as well as deepen the cognition andunderstanding of our team in the macro translation theory.
