On The Application Of Cooperative Principle To Interpretation In International Business Negotiation

Interpretation in international business negotiation is an important part of international business negotiation, which guarantees the process of international business negotiation. With special features, interpretation in international business negotiation requires interpreters to master more knowledge and professional skills. Therefore, the research of interpretation in international business negotiation strategy becomes more and more important.Most researches of interpretation in international business negotiation are based on relevance theory, face theory and skopos theory. However, as one of the most important concepts of pragmatics, Grice’s Cooperative Principle has not been adopted sufficiently in interpretation of international business negotiation. This paper studies interpretation in international business negotiation, and takes Cooperative Principle as theoretical guidance to enrich the strategies of interpretation in international business negotiation.The paper, on the one hand, overviews the interpretation in international business negotiation and the Cooperative Principle, and presents the feasibility of integrated study on interpretation in international business negotiation and the Cooperative Principle. On the other hand, the paper combines specific examples of interpretation in international business negotiation with the Cooperative Principle, and demonstrates that the observation of the Cooperative Principle ensures the clear and coherent expression of ideas in a faithful and integral manner. The violation of the Cooperative Principle can convey the conversational implicature, which contributes to maintaining cooperative relationship. The paper is to clarify the application of the Cooperative Principle in the international business negotiation, and to provide more interpreting strategies for interpreters in international business negotiation.
