The phenomenon of anaphora is complicated in human language. Reference research is an old and challenging subject in areas of linguistics and language philosophy. Since the late1970s, Linguists have made researches on anaphora from the perspective of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and have made some achievements respectively. But traditional linguistics mainly studied the sentence structure, they did not study the complicated anaphora and the deep choice-making system in natural way. This thesis is based on the theory of adaption proposed by Verschueren to explain the phenomenon of language use from the perspective of pragmatics, cognition, society and culture. This theory provides a whole frame for the study of anaphora. Because the politicians’ speeches are strongly intentional, the choice of the anaphora is fully reflected in their speeches. Obama is the only black president in U.S. history; his success has great relation with the prominent speeches, the paper selects fourteen Obama’s political speech. It tries to explore how Obama uses anaphora to adapt to the communicative situation from the view of the communicative factors, the speech structure, and the dynamic change so that he could achieve his communicative goal. Obama uses different anaphora to satisfy different communicative needs and a language choice to match different communicative factors; finally he could achieve his intention. According to the analysis, the intention of Obama is presented in front of the audience. The analyses imply that there are lots of factors that can have influence on anaphora choices, the factors such as subject consciousness, pragmatic and cognitive mechanism, dynamic context as well as social and cultural convention. Obama dynamically choosesproper and felicitous anaphora forms to convey his political intention and motivation andpersuades the audiences and tactfully defeats opponents. This thesis analyzes the anaphorafrom the perspectives of social and cognitive factors.
