On Translator’s Adaptation And Selection From The Approach Of Eco-translatology

“Eco-translatology” is a frontier theory that primarily proposed by Hu Gengshenin Qinghua University. From the perspective of ecology, it refers to the interpretationon process, nature, principles and methods of a translation. Meanwhile it discusses therelationship between the translator and the translated text in the light of the translativeeco-system. According to eco-translatology, the nature of translation lies in thetranslator’s selection after his or her adaptation to the translational environment. Theversion with the highest degree of holistic adaptations and selections can be seen asthe best one. Besides, the study of translator’s adaptations and selections can helpscholars evaluate the connection between the translator and the translated text.Therefore, the thesis is valuable to translation theories and practical meanings. Thethesis selects Ku Hungming and his Lun Yu as a case study, because, firstly, Ku’stranslation of Lun Yu is a classic but studies related to it are seriously lacking.Secondly, Ku’s translational eco-environment is typical and should be furtherdiscussed.The thesis presents Ku’s special translational eco-environment and deeplyanalyses his adaptations, what’s more, the thesis also summarizes Ku’s translationstrategies through dimensions of linguistic, culture and communication. On linguisticdimension, Ku slightly adjusts the use of grammar in the translating process to narrowthe gap between English and Chinese. On cultural dimension, Ku uses domesticationas his major translation strategy to disseminate Chinese culture. On communicative dimension, Ku adopts varied translation techniques including comparison, quotation,annotation and omission to make western world accept Confucius. Terminally, itcomes to the conclusion that Ku’s translation of Lun Yu is a successful translativeactivity for he holistically adapted to his translational eco-environments and madeoptimal selections. At the same time, the thesis provides a brand-new eye field forfollowing studies of Chinese Classics.
