Wa,written by Mo Yan,the winner of Nobel Prize in literature, has gained extensive attention since its publication in 2009 and was awarded Mao Dun prize in 2011 for its high artistic and cultural value. The English edition of Wa is rendered by Howard Goldblatt, the American sinologist, and published in 2014.So far, there are still few studies of the English edition of Wa at home and abroad due to its short published period.Goldblatt is regarded as “the most prestigious translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in the English-speaking countries”,whose philosophical idea and view on translation can shed light on the “Going Global” of Chinese literature. Therefore, this dessertation attempts to make an analysis of the translation of Wa rendered by Howard Goldblatt from the perspective of Eco-Translatology.Translation not only refers to the transformation between two languages but also a process of selections made by the translator. Thus, the author makes an effort to analyze the selections adopted by Goldblatt in translating Wa and explores the reasons for what he had done from the perspective of Eco-Translatology.Firstly,the autor analyzes the selections from the three dimensions as linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension, which are proposed by Eco-Translatology in translation studies;Secondly, the internal and external causes for the translator's selections are explored by the author from the perspective of translational eco-environment of Eco-Translatology.The author, through the above comprehensive analysis, concludes that Howard Goldblatt selects to remain the source text's language style and textual structure on linguistic dimension;on cultural dimension, the translator adopts domestication to deal with the sensitive politics and religion-related expressions while putting the foreignization at the first priority followed by domestication on the translation of idioms and proverbs;on communicative dimension, strategies as omission and rewriting are employed by the translator to realize the purpose of communication. The reasons for his multi-dimensional selections lie in different translational eco-environment that he needs to adapt in the translation of Wa from the perspective of Eco-Translatology.The causes can be divided into two parts: the internal causes, which include the translator's adaptation to his own need and competence while the external causes cover the adaptation to the source text, target social ideology, target reader and publisher. In other words, translational eco-environment exerts great influence on translator's selections of the source text and target text. Moreover, owing to the great disparities in historical and cultural background, there are several mistranslations remained to be discussed, providing a lesson for the subsequent translators and researchers. In conclusion, the success of the English edition of Wa results from the translator-Howard Goldblatt's selections in order to adapt to the translational eco-environment.
