Following Zhou dynasty folk songs and Han dynasty yuefu folk songs, yuefu folk songs of the Southern and Northern dynasties, which are mainly people’s oral creation, are another new development in the history of Chinese poetry. They not only reflect the new social reality, but also create a new art form and style. The study of musicality of folk songs in Southern and Northern dynasties, to some extent, gives a general summary of the disorderly self-conscious literature creation at that time. Despite the fact that yuefu folk songs of the northern and southern dynasties are products of the same age, the long time standoff between Southern and Northern dynasties, the rule of Xianbei nobles on Northern dynasty as well as the political, economic, cultural, ethnic and natural differences between the north and the south lead to different styles of folk songs. The duality and interdisciplinarity of the folk song culture and the diversity of music practical form are important bases of the research of yuefu folk songs from the perspective of musical culture. In previous studies, researchers from the perspective of music often failed to pay attention to the poetry historic meaning of "lyrics". On the contrary, researchers from the perspective of literature failed to pay attention to the musical foundation formed by literature features of "lyrics". For these reasons, aiming at exploring the association between musical background and evolution of lyrical literature form, this article tries to describe "lyrics" of the Southern and Northern dynasties in the frame of musical culture construction at that time and its specific musical activities in order to have a better understanding of the sophisticatedly multiple meanings of "lyrics" and explain certain issues on lyrical literature and literature history.Based on the above viewpoints, the article is divided into three chapters. The introduction part, as a summary of previous researches, covers the history and present evaluation of researches related to the topic. It summarizes the previous research of yuefu poetry musicality of the northern and southern dynasties and introduces the significance of topic selection, research contents as well as research ideas and methods. The first chapter analyzes the musicality of yuefu folk songs (relationship between tomes and tunes). Further, it introduces the theory for the poetry music analysis in the following chapter and gives a brief introduction of musical score translation in later chapters. The second chapter, using the method mentioned in the preceding chapter, analyzes the musical characteristics sentence by sentence based on specific examples of folk songs of the Southern and Northern dynasties, such as implicitness and melodiousness in Xiqu songs and Wu songs of the Southern dynasty, exoticness and complexity of Shenxian songs, free structures and rich tones of Zaqu songs. Then it analyzes the musicality of folk songs of the Northern dynasty (mainly Lianggujiao Hengchui Qu). It mainly focuses on the resounding and solemn characters of musicality by analyzing different styles of poetry. The third chapter analyzes the literature and historical value of yuefu folk songs of the Southern and Northern dynasties. The literature value consists of literature and aesthetic levels. On literature level, it realized the transition from "song" to "poem", promoted the fusion of literati poems and folk songs and inspired the music literature later. On aesthetic level, it had a profound impact on aesthetics of the Southern and Northern dynasties. The historic value consists of levels of music system, literature history, and ethic history. First it changed the institution setup and resulted in standardization of music. Second it changed the role of folk songs and was beneficial for cultural communication between the north and the south as well as cultural assimilation. Third it reflected the opposition and unification between yuefu songs and traditional music and built the ethic view of unity of nature and music at that time.
