Max Reger was a distinguished German musician for the turn of the century. He was a significant person during the development history of western music. The achievements and position has been showed up when he was alive. He was popular in German and some other European countries.He was called as the last romantic polyphony master at the end of19th century. However, his great contributions and historical status in musical creation had never been widely accepted since he was dead. He was rarely acknowledged by people at that time. Until1970s’people had gradually recognized his great value. Reger had always been standing on his ground of classical music. He inherited the traditional thinking of classic.He not only did great contribution to European music, but also opened the way and inspiration for music of next generation.This paper analyzes Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Telemann at the beginning. Moreover, it contains Reger’s musical characteristics and words, which makes us understand his musical style deeper.This paper has four chapters. The1st chapter introduces Reger’s creative life. His experience influenced his creative concepts.The2nd chapter mainly introduces Reger’s work Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Telemann. It analyzes from the creative skill, harmony, melody, tonality and polyphony. In addition, it finds out Reger’s characteristic creative and musical style.The3rd chapter is a summary of play main points of work Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Telemann. It sums up the performance characteristics and methods of Reger’s music.The4th chapter is the conclusion.Reger’s distinguished creation characteristic was extraordinary special at that time in musical creation. However, he leaved new direction and viewpoint to the musicians in next generations. He could be the reference and inspiration for the musicians in the next generation. Therefore, the study of Reger is necessary.
