The thesis mentions about the inevitability of Eustacia’s tragedy from the perspectiveof the social discipline. Eustacia’s denial of disciplinary skills makes her the heterogeneity ofthe heath. Meanwhile, the pursuit of her own homogeneity triggers off the disciplinary power, leading her to the abyss of death little by little. The body of the thesis consists of three parts. The first part begins with thegeographical advantage of Eustacia as living in the center of the heath. Then I adopt ageographical approach to draw a spatially analytical diagram, on which the femaleprotagonist is totally isolated from the heath, as being the heterogeneity. All the abovedemonstrate Eustacia’s coldness towards, and denials of the heath. In the second part, thethesis lists out the homogeneity of Eustacia, the temporary disregard of it by having a loveaffair with Wildeve, the pursuit of homogeneity by marrying Clym. Unluckily, Clympossesses totally different homogeneity. The third part systematically explains the mechanismof the social discipline. Eustacia’s chasing after the homogeneity poses a threat to the unityand the stability of the heath. Meanwhile, the heath tries to assimilate her by the disciplinaryskills, but it is pitilessly denied. Then the disciplinary power comes into play, makingEustacia taste to self-criticism and loneliness. She then transfers her anger to the heath, anddies on the way of escape. On the other hand, her death also reveals the extreme reason of thesociety, forbidding any impurity of madness.
