This is a Report on the Translation of Mothers of Invention: Women of theSlaveholding South in the American Civil War (Chapter2) by Drew Gilpin Faust,current President of Harvard University and renowned historian who specializes inthe historical studies of American South and American Civil War. The book is oneof the authors’ six famous monographs, and is of great significance on historicalstudies of women in the American Civil War. The main contents of this report aredivided into four parts: Part One is the translation project description, includingproject background, objectives and significance. Part Two is the study background,including the theoretical basis, ie. Functional Equivalence Theory, and theintroduction to the source text. Part Three covers the difficulties and methods usedduring the translation process. The difficulties lie in understanding and gatheringrelevant background knowledge, and the translation of long and difficult sentences.The translator needs to refer to pertinent background materials including academicmonographs, articles from periodicals and books on translation theories. Themethods of translation include addition, reduction, conversion, etc.. Part Fourconcludes with the lessons, implications and unsolved problems in the translationproject.
