A Study Of Geographical Names With Characters Of "Ba" And "Ping" In Downtown Areas Of Chongqing

Chongqing is a famous cultural city in the hinterland of mountains and rivers,where the geographical names reflect unique geographical environment andhumanistic landscapes of “mountain cities”. In this paper, geographical names withcharacters of “Ba” and “Ping” for nine downtown areas of Chongqing areexamined comprehensively in detail, so as to help people understand topographicfeatures these names indicate, provide relevant basis for studying geographicdistribution of downtown areas in Chongqing and enhance people’s understandingof social and historical cultures. This paper is divided into five parts altogether asfollows:Part1is the Introduction, where the author focuses on introducing currentresearch on geographical names with characters “Ba” and “Ping” for downtownareas of Chongqing and the research significance. In addition, research objects andmain research methods are defined and illustrated.In Part2, geographical names with characters “Ba” and “Ping” fordowntown areas of Chongqing are summarized. This part primarily introducesbasic situation of areas designated by geographical names with characters “Ba” and“Ping” for downtown areas of Chongqing and components of the geographicalnames.Part3analyzes categories of geographical names with characters “Ba” and“Ping” for downtown areas of Chongqing. In this part, such geographical namesare classified into three types, including “descriptive geographical names”,“narrative geographical names” and “implied geographical names”. Besides,different distribution of various geographical names in distinct areas andunderlying historical and cultural causes are deeply analyzed.In Part4, geographical characteristics of geographical names with “Ba” and“Ping” for downtown areas of Chongqing are analyzed. This part comprehensivelydescribes geographical categories of geographical names with characters of “Ba”and “Ping” for nine of downtown areas of Chongqing while analyzing their similarities and differences.Part5is the Conclusion, where categories of geographical names withcharacters of “Ba” and “Ping” for downtown areas of Chongqing and theirgeographical characteristics are summed up.
