As a masterpiece of Charles Dickens, David Copperfield has been well received in China, and the study of its Chinese versions has never stopped. Lin Shu has enjoyed a very high reputation in the translation circles of China and his version of David Copperfield, entitled Kuai Rou Yu Sheng Shu (《块肉余生述》) stands out for its particularity and distinction in the translation field. As a result, plenty of researches have been made on his translation of this novel. But the current researchers have a preference for comparative studies on various Chinese versions and focus on adaptation theory, Skopos theory and translation’s subjectivity. This thesis aims to make an in-depth analysis on Lin Shu’s Kuai Rou Yu Sheng Shu from the perspective of ideology. The qualitative approach is adopted by the author. By comparing the original text and the target text and analyzing Lin Shu’s translation strategies, this research will explore the influence of ideology on literary translation strategies. The major findings of this thesis are summarized as follows:1. Literary, political and social-cultural factors are the three major aspects of ideology which exert great influence on the literary translation strategies.2. The influence of ideology on Lin Shu’s translation strategies of Kuai Rou Yu Sheng Shu manifests duality: his acceptance of fresh western ideas and his yearning and attachment to traditional Chinese ideas.3. Due to the complexity of Lin Shu’s ideology, domestication is entangled with foreignization in his translation and the concrete strategies vary under his ideology.
