Porcelain is the treasure of ancient Chinese arts, and also an important manifestationof the long and brilliant oriental aesthetics. From the perspective of design, the shape,glaze and decoration of the porcelain are all full of expression of wisdom. From thesalvage of the wrecked Blackstone until today, most of the scholars are more concernedabout the heritage value of the porcelain along with it, but the analysis of the decoration ofporcelain from the perspective of design are very rare. The porcelain decoration is closelylinked with the word and the religion, and in the same time, they are an importantcommunication carrier of the calligraphy, painting and the other traditional arts. When thedecoration meets the porcelain, which cultural effects will they bring?This paper takes the Blackstone ship-wreck in late Tang Dynasty as the researchobject, starting from an interdisciplinary perspective, by using the design andarchaeological research methods, analyses carefully the porcelain decoration in theBlackstone. By comparing the porcelain in this ship with the products of some otherChinese kilns, as well as taking the export sea routes for clues, analyzing thecommunication and contacts with many overseas countries, we try to explore its economic,cultural benefits and the far-reaching impact that it left to the future generations.The first chapter is taking the archaeological view, according to the export routes ofthe porcelain, complemented by the research methods of design, traced a research on thewrecked ship Blackstone, in order to understand the political, cultural and scientificbackground; Chapter II is using the design research methods, analyzing the decoration andcharacteristics style of the porcelain from domestic and foreign aspects, and their relationwith the Arab calligraphy and the traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy; in ChapterIII, the research areas of Blackstone’s porcelain decoration are extending gradually fromgeographical surface to a deeper spiritual and religion level, which leading to the ideologyof decoration design; in the last chapter, we analyze the economic environment reflected by the export of porcelain, as well as the economic strategy taken by some porcelain kilns,which worth a modern reflection.By studying Blackstone wreck-ship in the late Tang Dynasty, the author was able toexplore the economic level, the communication, the trade mode and the technology of thatperiod. The porcelain is a huge cultural treasury and the shining pearl of Chinese culturalhistory, our research and exploration can only be described as a piece of a jigsaw. Thestudy in this paper on the design of decorative patterns of porcelain, is a rediscovery of ourown cultural traditions, and also a response to the requirements of the cultural andhistorical continuity.
