Xiaoyi County has a long history and cultural prosperity, and thereare many historic sites. As a carrier of traditional opera, ancientstages is used to link the various Chinese ancient religious customsand folk culture. And at the same time, these stages are carrying therelationship between traditional opera art form and dramaperformance, even the national sentiments and spirit. Ancient stagescan be recognized as the witnesses to the formation of Chinese opera,and these stages have promoted the development and flourish ofdrama. Therefore, ancient stages are considered as the invaluable“solid drama culture”. What’s more, the ancient stages also show thebeautiful and brilliant ancient architectural art.The opera culture in Xiaoyi is very prosperous. In addition to thetraditional Jin Opera, Xiaoyi also has the extremely localcharacteristic shadow play, puppet show and the WanWanQiang,which are also reflected in Xiaoyi ancient stages constructions. Theauthor has carried on the systematic inspections to the ancient stageconstructions in towns of Xiaoyi and finds that more than53ancientstages exist in these towns. There are two ancient stages in Daxiaobutown, six ancient stages in Ducun town, eight ancient stages inWutong town, five ancient stages in Gaoyang town and Zhupu town, four ancient stages in Nanyang town, Xiabu town and Duizhen town.There are also four ancient stages and five puppet stages in thesurrounding villages of Xiaoyi City. In these ancient stages, there aretwo Ming dynasty stages, which respectively are SanHuangMiaoglass stage and LongTian temple stage of Xiaoyuan village. At thesame time, the author finds that there are two modern reconstructionstages in Duizhen town, which respectively are Xinmin Guandi templestage and Hanjiatan Guandi temple stage. The rest of ancient stagesin Xiaoyi City are the Qing dynasty architectures. Four structuralintegrated and small shaping shadow puppet ancient stages havebeen moved to the Xiaoyi Puppet Museum. A shadow play stage existsin the Shanglinghu LongTian temple in Zhupu town. There are twohistorical sites listed under the provincial protection and twenty threehistorical sites under the city protection in these ancient stages ofXiaoyi City. Daxiaobu town and Wutong town have the betterpreserved ancient stages; Duizhen town has several reconstructionstages; Nanyang town and Gaoyang town have several stages that arebuilt on the basis of the original stages; however, the stages inYangquanqu town have been damaged. Since large parts of Xiaoyi aremountainous regions, the main hall building characterized with localfeature is the cave dwelling type.This thesis mainly contains the meticulous investigations anddetailed descriptions to ancient stages in eight towns(Ducun town,Nanyang town, Wutong town, Daxiaobu town, Gaoyang town, Zhuputown, Duizhen town and Xiabu town) and the surrounding villages ofXiaoyi City, which Combining the analysis and discussion on the stagenotes, drama inscriptions and stage stylings of ancient stages. What’s more, the shadow play stage, the shadow play-puppet show stage andthe modern shadow play-puppet show stage having extremely localcharacteristics are separately stated and described. Making detailedand systematic carding and illustration, having the comprehensiveand real records to the existing ancient stages in Xiaoyi City, andstriving to apply the knowledge of traditional construction technologyto do the professional research about the development and evolutionof Xiaoyi ancient stages history can reveal preciousness of Xiaoyiancient stages’ completed sequence.
