Women And The Radicalism Of The American Revolution

Being an important part of the American history, the American Revolution (1763-1789) has long been an important academic sector. Among the many research concerns, the radicalism of American Revolution is a controversial topic shared by historians. However, a further study is still required as to combine women’s participation with the tendency of the Revolution. By attaching "women" to the history of American Revolution, this paper made an attempt to provide a proper perspective to understand the alteration of women’s political and social status, as well as to find a new pointcut to further develop the meaning of the American Revolution.This paper not only investigated women’s roles in the American Revolution, but also attempted to verify the Revolution’s influence on women in detail. The main arguments put forward by this paper are as follows. For many women, the American Revolution opened opportunities to break through the traditional roles and a process of politicization; Though the American Revolution failed to change women’s deferencial roles thoroughly, it did brings a series of radical influences for American Women, i.e.,under the process of the Revolution, the female consciousness was awakening, their political conscious and ability got improved, and women began to embrace much more educational opportunities in consequence of the Revolution.In a word, women’s improvements in mind, wisdom and abilities constitute significant reflections of the radicalism of the American Revolution.
