The interpretation project report aims to investigate the redundancy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting through comparing the simulation interpretation of Premier Wen’s Press Conference (2011-2012) with the one that given by the professional interpreter, Zhang Lu. Under the guidance of the interpretive theory and the economy principle, the report analyses the phenomenon and categories of redundancy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting and puts forward compression strategy as an effective way to solve the redundancies in interpreting, coupled with an in depth analysis of examples by using compression strategy. The report concludes that redundancies occurred in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting are mainly caused by the redundant elements of the Chinese language, the characteristics of spoken Chinese and context, as well as differences between Chinese and English languages in syntax and culture. Based on the distinctive differences between Chinese and English, we classify the redundancies frequently occurred in Chinese-English interpreting into three categories, namely, lexical, syntactic, and semantic redundancy. The results indicate that compression strategy plays an effective role in solving the redundancy problems in Chinese-English interpreting. The compression strategy is not only a strategy on the literary form level used by the interpreter to simplify the translation. It’s also a communicative strategy conducive to the audience to accept and understand the source information.
