History painting is a genre in painting defined by subject matter rather than anartistic style, depicting a moment in a narrative story, rather than a static subject such asa portrait. And history painting was traditionally regarded as the highest form ofWestern painting, occupying the most prestigious place in the hierarchy of genres, andconsidered the equivalent to the epic in literature. From the end of the eighteenthcentury to the beginning of the twentieth century the world has changed in Europe, aseries of major political events have taken places, such as the French Revolution. Thisarticle meant to analyze how artists call for humanity and society moral through themasterpieces of several great French artists, and seek for the cultural and societalmeanings of history painting.
