Records of Jiankang is a chronological historical book written by Xu Song, a historian in Tang Dynasty. It consists of20volumes, from the first year of Xing ping Period of the Eastern Han Dynasty (194AD), to the third year of Zhen Ming Period of Chen Dynasty (i.e. the ninth year of Kai Huang Period of Sui Dynasty,589AD), nearly480,000words, including4volumes of Wu Dynasty,6volumes of Eastern Jin Dynasty,4volumes of Song Dynasty,2volumes of Qi Dynasty,2volumes of Liang Dynasty,2volumes of Chen Dynasty. Records of Jiankang is a chronological history book of the Six Dynasties. It records in detail the regime change and deeds of emperors and officials in Eastern Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen Dynasty, those dynasties all set their capital in Jiankang (named Jan Ye in Wu Dynasty, currently named Nanjing). Some of the material is not official, therefore has high philology and historical value. Especially after Song’s site inspection, the book describes relic of the Six Dynasties, such as Tai Chu Palace, Jiankang Palace, Hua lin Park, Qing xi River, Lu Ji Tomb, the imperial mausoleums of the Southern Dynasty, etc., over100places, which provides various historical data for us to understand the land, mountains, fortresses, the Rise and Fall of the palaces of Jiankang City in the Six Dynasties, and is important historical data to study the history in Wei-Jin, Southern&Northern Dynasties and regional history and geography of Nanjing area.From the perspective of historical philology, the article re-examines the academic value of Records of Jiankang in historical philology, starts from previous research, on the basis of summarizing the versions, collating, and editing, focuses on the analysis of the style, main content and philology value of the book, conducts a complete analysis and interpretation of Records of Jiankang, and strives to make new breakthroughs out of previous studies.The article consists of5chapters:introduction, compilation and circulating, style characteristics, main content, philology value of Records of Jiankang. Introduction mainly discusses the biography of Xu Song, background of the book, thinking, structure, key and difficult points of the article. Compilation and circulating focuses on versions in the following dynasties after its first publication, as well as the motivation and background when Xu Song wrote the book; compared with other historical books, the most prominent feature of Records of Jiankang is its style characteristics, which is mostly chronological, mixed with various styles. This section focuses on the analysis and interpretation with the aid of historical data; the analysis of the main content includes4parts:political events, historical figures, palaces and cities, and anecdotes, which is systematically summarized with the aid of historical data; the analysis on philology value is the highlight of the article. The article analyzes the philology value from the perspective of preservation of historical data, collation value, editing value and Nanjing urban geographic and historical geographic research value.This article focuses on3aspects:the style, the structure and content, the philology value of Records of Jiankang. The difficulty lies in the style characteristics and Xu Song’s historical thoughts. When referring to these key and difficult points, this article emphasizes summarizing method and comparing method, through the analysis and interpretation of historical data, on the basis of Records of Jiankang, comprehends official corrections since Tang and Song Dynasty and writings of Chao Gongwu, Wang Mingsheng and other famous historians. Generally, digs deep historical data, any valuable thoughts and arguments are rooted in historical data itself, sorts out relevant historical data, delivers new thinking and explorations on the basis of the overall structure, ideas and analysis are based on historical data, the structure of the article focuses on the discussion of the style and philology value of the book.The innovation of the article lies in3aspects:Firstly, based on the results of previous studies, comprehensively studies the author, background, style, versions, and philology values of the book. Secondly, digs deep the difficulties of the previous research, studies its style issue, with the aid of relevant historical data, comparatively analyzes its style characteristics of mostly chronological, mixed with various styles, delivers an in-depth analysis on the style of the book. Thirdly, studies the weak link in current academic research, to make up for their deficiencies. Current study on Records of Jiankang focuses on versions and collation, especially historical data, there is still research space in historical thoughts and philology value of the book. The article will focus on analyzing philology value of Records of Jiankang, it is comprehensive yet has highlights, not only summarizes the existing research results of Records of Jiankang, but also offers new views and insights on Xu Song’s historic thoughts, philology value and style characteristics, etc. forms a complete and comprehensive study on Records of Jiankang, providing a new thinking direction in future research in the field.
