This paper mainly studies on the meanings of archaic words in Haimen dialect diachronically. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. It reviews the previous researches, points out what has not been studied; it gives a brief introduction of the meaning, methods, steps of the study; it defines the archaic words in Haimen dialect. In the second part, we have made a textual research of sorting on96words. For each word, we first explain the meanings. And then list the actual cases in Haimen dialect, or enumerate the examples in the local authors’works. If the definition is biased, or the original word has objections, we will correct it with the relevant information. The third part describes the historical periods of the words. Combined with relevant archaic words, we find them in the ancient literature. And then according to the earliest appearance of the word, we put it into the historical period. The historical periods are divided into seven parts which include:"Qin and Han Dynasties""Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties""Sui Tang and Five Dynasties""Song Dynasty""Yuan Dynasty""Ming Dynasty" and "Qing Dynasty"The fourth part probes into the evolution of meanings of archaic words. It can be said that this is a creative part. We borrow the method which studies the evolution of the word meaning. The method is from the book "The ancient Chinese vocabulary outline". From the perspective of "increase and decrease of the sememe" and "change of original sememe", we examine the evolution of the meanings."Increase and decrease of the sememe" is divided into "increase of the sememe" and "decrease of the sememe"."Change of original sememe" is dividede into four parts—"expand""reduce""transfer" and "translocation". By comparing the ancient meanings and dialect meanings of the words, we can see that the archaic words inheriting from Ancient Chinese in Haimen dialect is not static. The fifth part discusses the effect of the archaic words in Haimen dialect on the language study, which mainly discusses from three aspects. The first is the role of literature. The second is the role of the dictionary definition. The third is the role of study on Chinese dialect and history of Chinese language.
