The South Korean film has risen above the others in the context of globalization since the1990s. With the substantial support from the Korean government and the implementation of film rating system, it has gained a huge room for its development. After stepping into its revitalized period, the South Korea did much work of learning from the development pattern of Hollywood genre film and taking into consideration its own indigenous factors. Nowadays, the South Korean film is now unfolding its unique cultural and artistic essence. Therefore, successfully edged itself into the Asian film market. It not only gains a lot of fans but also wins a good reputation in the international market by doing great on all sorts of film festivals. Although the typed development of Chinese film began later than that of South Korea, it is now entering its Golden Age and begins to develop rapidly. The boom of film’s typification, to some extent, symbolizes the gradual maturity of this industry in China.However, Chinese film meets some problems similar to what has happened to the South Korean film industry before it implemented the film rating system. Therefore, it is necessary for us to compare the phenomena existing in the development of Chinese genre film to that of the South Korea.This thesis compares the genre of new-age’s Chinese war films to those of South Korea in its revitalizing period from the perspective of genre study, aiming at making a systematic study.The introduction part of this thesis focuses the statue quo of the related research at home and abroad, and states the background and significance of this research. Determines the research questions and purposes of studying the war films of China and South Korea by doing the literature review. The first chapter discusses the theme of human nature embodied in the war films. Meanwhile, deals with the distortion of human nature and soul bringing about by wars in a historical perspective. The second chapter compares the narrative strategies of war films in China and South Korea from two aspects, namely, the setting of characters and the creating of the plot. The third chapter deals with the presenting of ideology embodied in war films of the two countries. To be specific, the expressive way of South Korean war film reflects in the evolution of relationship between South Korea and North Korea, whereas the expressive approach of Chinese war film reflects in the technique of heroism expression, through the shaping of characters and the description of the relation among characters. The last part is of this thesis draws a conclusion from the previous comparison and analysis, and proposes several inspiration for the further development of genre film.
