In the early twenty-first century,South Korean criminal films began to forma specific framework of genre.A series of classics, such as Die Bad,Public Enemy,Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance,Memories of Murder and so on,became pioneers ofthis genre film.In the past two decades,South Korean crime films have not onlyachieved the genre development in the local film industry, but also become aprominent phenomenon in the world movie market. However,in the same context of consumer era,Chinese criminal filmshaven't yet got rid of the author's stylization.Compared with South Korean ones, criminal films in China mainland just have single genre element, where domesticdirectors' awareness of genre is weak.In addition,Chinese government adoptsstrict policy called film censorship on filmmaking standards while theatmosphere of Korean filmmaking is open and free with the support of thegovernment. So Chinese criminal movies have to learn from South Korean, taketheir essence and go to the dregs. We should also focus on the expression ofnational emotions in criminal films to achieve the pursuit of genre andcommercialization on the basis of attaching importance to the creation of script.Although China and South Korea are close geographically and have similarcultural backgrounds, they have completely different image characteristics in thecreation of criminal films. This thesis selects typical criminal films from Chinaand South Korea in the early 21 st century as an example to compare thenarrative elements,audio-visual languages and development status of thosebetween two countries by using text analysis, film typology and other methods.Focusing on the specific movie works,we try to explore how South Korea couldproduce such mature film genre with commercial and artistic in just over tenyears. At the same time,Chinese criminal movies are supposed to reflectthemselves and manage to solve some problems in the development offilmmaking through learning from the successful experience of South Koreancriminal films. To find the most suitable narrative patterns for the domesticmarket and fill the blanks of movie genre,Chinese criminal films have a long wayto go.
