| In an era of cross-cultural communication, films have made an enormous contribution as a modern art reflecting social lives, of which subtitles have bridged between different cultures to help audience from target language to better understand and accept. In terms of current situation in subtitle translation, Europe countries have already reached consensus on strategies and standards of subtitle translation, while China lags behind due to few effective supervisions and less guidance for subtitle translation practice. German Functionalist Translation Theory has surpassed traditional translation theories offering a new perspective for subtitle translation study.Using Lost on Journey as a case study, this thesis does research on C-E film subtitle translation guided by Functionalist Translation Theory. By applying skopostheorie, translation action theory and text typology into Lost on Journey’s subtitle translation by regarding subtitle translation as a purposeful activity, an interpersonal action and a text-processing activity. Thus, author discusses subtitle translation methods of this film according to the former results, which put forward three methods, namely domestication primary&foreignization secondary, explicitation and colloquialism.Through researching on subtitle translation methods of Lost on Journey, author reaches a conclusion that Functionalist Translation Theory has great guidance power for film subtitle translation. Basing on subtitle translation’s skopos, director’s intention and dominating function of film text of different films, subtitle translation methods can be decided. |
