This is a translation project report on A New Politics of Identity: politicalprinciples for an interdependent world (Chapter5“Multicultural Society and theConvergence of Identities”) by Bhikhu Parekh, a professor of political philosophyat the University of Westminster. Since different kinds of cultural diversity raisedifferent problems, the author concentrates on immigrants, the archetypal strangersin Chapter5, and argues that the successful “integration” of immigrants requiresappropriate redefinitions of themselves and the receiving society’s identity. This report briefly introduces the general information of the translationproject and the source text in the beginning, identifying that the source textbelongs to the typical political philosophy, which is always objective andcharacterized by frequent use of terminologies, cohesive ties and long sentences,ect.. In consideration of the general readers’ reception, functional equivalence isgiven much attention in the process of the translation and some relevant translationstrategies, such as “literal translation with annotation”,“parataxis instead ofhypotaxis”, and “division” are adopted to make the language of the target textmore understandable and readable, so that it can give the general readers a betterunderstanding of the author’s idea and raise their reading interests. In addition, byillustrating such translation strategies with specific examples and drawing lessonsfrom this project, I hope that the project and the report shall serve as a referencefor the translation of the text of political philosophy.
