As an important auxiliary component of definition, the pictorial illustration can, ina direct way, influences the effectiveness of the dictionary definition and the quality ofdictionaries positively or negatively, which depends on whether it is set scientificallyand seasonably or not. The New Chinese-English Dictionary, a popular medium-sizedChinese-English dictionary, contains far more pictorial illustrations than other samekind of dictionaries. So studying the pictorial illustration in this dictionary cansignificantly shed new light on theoretical value and practical significance. On the basisof the Relevance-Communicative Model (R-C Model for short), the present thesis willstudy the pictorial illustration in The New Chinese-English Dictionary (NCED for short)to comprehensively discuss the structural features of the pictorial illustration andsystematically explore the existing problems of the pictorial illustration in mainstreamChinese-English dictionaries.According to sampling analysis, the main findings of the study can be concluded asfollows: four features of the macro-structure of pictorial illustrations in this dictionaryare presented and there are seven problems existing in the micro-setting of the pictorialillustration in the dictionary. Besides, based on the R-C Model, five principles areproposed to optimize the pictorial illustration in Chinese-English dictionaries. They arerespectively: principle of system, principle of necessity, principle of economy,principle of user-friendliness, principle of cultural communication.The present study has great theoretical and practical significance. Theoreticallyspeaking, this study expands the representation model of Chinese-English dictionaryand improves the content and system of lexicographical research. Practically, the studycan enhance the representation effect of Chinese-English dictionaries and providesome related suggestions for the compilation and modification of these dictionaries.
