A Chinese-English Translation Report On Fictional Dialogue In Release That Witch-Under The Guidance Of Relevance-Adaptation Model

This paper is a report on the Chinese-English dialogue translation of a famous Chinese fantasy novel,Release That Witch.The author summarizes some difficulties she has met and experience she has gained in translating a few chapters of this novel,which has kept being updated from March 26,2016 and just after several months,attracted numerous fans both at home and abroad.This novel,the first 300 chapters of which were translated by American fans,is one with artful plots and rich characters,whose personalities are enriched by dialogue.In order to depict the characters in the source text to the target readers thoroughly,the author read up on the relevance-adaptation model and then applied it to the translation of dialogue in Release That Witch,thus producing relatively acceptable translation.This paper consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background information about the translation task and the translation procedure.The second chapter clarifies the functions and features of fictional dialogue.The third chapter is an overview of translation theories,including an introduction of adaptation and relevance theories and their strengths,and also a discussion of relevance-adaptation model and its implications for translation.The fourth chapter involves an analysis and discussion of translation examples.The author discusses the application of adaptation-relevance model in translation and corresponding translation strategies and methods at 3 levels,the lexical,syntactic,and socio-cultural level.The last chapter serves as a summary of this translation project.After this translation practice,the author recognizes the importance of understanding and applying theoretical knowledge to translation practices.This will hopefully help translators to produce their translations with reasonably high quality.
