Lin Fengmian formed a particular style in figure painting. He usually tookfemale, drama and real-life scenes as the subjects of his figure painting. Generallyspeaking, he was a realistic artist, and had his own illustration and understandingon realism. He didn’t prefer picture-like drawing and considered the styleinflexible, ordinary and valueless. The figure painting style of Lin underwent three stages including expressiverealistic style, decorative realistic style and the style combining the former two.The expressive realistic style was formed during the exploration in his studyingoverseas and developing education. It became mature during the period of his stayin Chong Qing and later in HangZhou. The decorative realistic style was formedduring the period of his staying in Shang Hai. It was because of some formula inChinese traditional drama that he understood modern western art, the work ofPicasso and began his artistic reform in Shang Hai. The form of decorativelanguage in his painting was based on the assumption on art essence and divisionof art forms by western modernism, which, together with Lin’s extensive traditionview,is each other’s essential prerequisite. It was just because of his cognitive leapthat he could create an absolutely new style in his painting.According to Lin, art is the combination of ration and emotion. Some art workconveys more emotional elements, while others more rational. However, all ofthem can combine the two elements well. Lin’s deep insight into art essence helpsus to understand the origin of his expressive and decorative realistic style in hisfigure painting. In a word, Lin’s painting experienced the leap from expressive style todecorative style. As a matter of fact, the two were combined perfectly in hispainting due to the inner realistic factor. Realism can be considered as the core ofLin’s creation.
