Based on the reference theory of systemic functional linguistics, the thesis is aimed at a research on referential nominal of the People’s Daily editorial. There are three major points:First point is about the definition of reference. The definitions of reference which are introduced by representatives of systematic functional schools, such as M.A.K.Halliday, Ruqaiya Hasan and Hu Zhuanglin, are analyzed and contrasted. Together with the analysis of actual corpora, two facts are confirmed as the characteristic of reference:information recovery and co-referentiality.Second point is about the reference of referential nominal. The referential nominal can be divided into two parts:pronoun, noun and noun phrase. The pronoun is consisted of personal pronoun and demonstrative pronoun. The contents of noun and noun phrase are locally isomorphic-referential constituent, heterotypic-referential constituent, and other words cannot be compared with referent constituents. The thesis is aimed at a study on characteristics, regular patterns, similarities and differences of different types of referential nominal, referent item and reference. The third point is on hierarchy of referentiality of referential nominal. Based on the front analysis, the thesis concludes the hierarchy of referentiality of referential nominal by analyzing and sorting the referentiality of referential nominal. Meanwhile, for the referential item which is highly referential and difficult to connect with referent item if rely on its semantic content, the thesis gives suggestions on building the reference. The suggestions are consisted of two aspects:shortening the distance between referential nominal and referent item, adding contextual semantic content.
