The purpose of college English teaching is to cultivate the students’ comprehensivecompetence to use English, and reading ability is one of the main objectives of collegeEnglish teaching, which helps the students to get information through this tool and improvetheir culture awareness and diathesis. Furthermore, many schools advocated the “life-long”learning because it is quite necessary for learners to acquire a capacity to learn by their own.Autonomous learning is not only conducive to improve the students’ academic performancebut also the foundation of life-long learning and personal development. If the students’initiatives, creativities and autonomous learning ability are developed, they will get moreinformation through reading by themselves. Therefore, the teaching methods should beimproved to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability and to improve their learningefficiency. The researcher has tried the autonomous learning approach to improve learner’sreading ability and also tries to find out the potentially positive relationship betweenautonomous learning and reading ability through this paper.The researcher has chosen two classes of engineering cost major as the Control Class andfrom the Experimental Class in a vocational college in Hebei province. All the students arefreshmen and never experience any training about autonomous learning. The researcheradopts the quantitative and qualitative design to get the results. Through the two-termempirical study, the researcher used the instruments such as questionnaires, classroomobservation, interview and proficiency tests to finish this researcher. In order to make the datamore persuasive and meaningful, the researcher also adopted the SPSS software, which makesthe statistical analysis more clearly and accurately, to compare the data between theexperimental class and control class after the data collection.The whole years’ study shows that autonomous learning surely can affect the students’reading achievements. Once the students are regarded English learning as a burden, but nowthey are pleased to learn it and most of them explored their enthusiasm on English learning.Autonomous learning is undoubtedly an effective teaching approach both in theory andpractice to improve the students’ ability. The researcher tries to do some elementary exploration on the application of autonomouslearning into college English reading teaching and learning. The researcher hoped that thedata of this practical operation could be reference for the further curriculum design andteacher training.
