With the globalization of culture and economy, China has entered an era of challenge and opportunity. The limited speaking ability of college students and traditional speaking classes could not meet the need of the growing demand of Chinese talents with excellent English speaking proficiency. In recent years, English movie as a new means of teaching material has drawn attention of many Chinese teachers of English. The variety of topics and contents, as well as the moving pictures and well-written lines of English movie could create a relaxing and interesting learning environment for Chinese college students.This research aims at finding out the result of using English movie as a language carrier for English speaking class on the student’s speaking proficiency, with the hope to provide suggestions for English learning students. Both qualitative and quantitative studies are adopted in this research. The research is based on Input hypothesis, output hypothesis, communicative approach and relevant research both domestic and abroad. The research subjects are44students from higher vocational level, English major of Xi’an Medical University. The research lasted from March of2012to June of the same year. There are2questionnaires,2tests and1interview conducted through the process. At the beginning of the research, the first questionnaire is done. The first questionnaire is conducted to collect information about students’learning interests, motivation and the obstacles met during learning to speak. The pretest at the beginning and the posttest at the end of the semester are compared to analyze the difference in improving students’speaking proficiency. The second questionnaire and the interview are conducted for student’s feedback also. All information and data are analyzed using Microsoft Office software and SPSS software.According to the result of the research, conclusion is made as follows. The English speaking class assisted by using English movie as a language source could better motivate and interest students in learning to speak. The specific areas been improved are the students’confidence, interest, less anxiety, better pronunciation, culture knowledge acquisition and else. In this way, students’ speaking proficiencies are improved as a result. Such teaching approach brings more advantage in teaching than the traditional textbook based teaching. Finally, the shortcomings and limitations of the research are presented and suggestions for further research have been made.
