Strictly speaking,"Modernism" is not sufficient to summarize the evolution of Taiwan’s modern novelist, therefore, this article puts forward the concept of "modern consciousness of Chinese literature" in the view of modernity. Modern consciousness of Chinese literature, based on the relationship between enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity, includes the following contents:individualism and liberal values, independent consciously literary aesthetic pursuit, and the humanitarianism based on the above two consciousnesses. The modernization of Chinese literature in the twentieth century can be seen as the establishment and evolution of modern consciousness. From this perspective, we can put the Taiwan modernist into the overall architecture of Chinese literature in the twentieth century to make a reviewCompared to the May Fourth generation facing difficult choices between enlightenment and salvation, practical function and aesthetic function in literature, Taiwan modernist novelists do not have much historical baggage so that they indicate "anti-enlightenment" attitude instead, deepening the individualism and independent aesthetic sense of modern consciousness. But because moving farther and farther on the road of individualism, they get into the "extremely loneliness" from freedom, which make them face a new crisis.And with "modern consciousness" as a standard, Wang Wenxing and Qi Dengsheng increasingly hold a conspicuous position.
