4-chloro-3,5-xylenol(PCMX) is an effective antibacterial agent with low toxicity. It is widely used as a disinfectant in personal products, and as preservative in leather and wood industries.Traditional manufacturing process for PCMX is using chlorine or sulfuryl chloride as chlorinating agent, reacts with3,5-xylenol(MX) in an inert organic solvent. However, the above process isn’t green and environment friendly, because it generates hydrogen chloride or sulfur dioxide as by-products, and uses toxic organic solvents.In order to resolve the above disadvantageous, this article makes a research for oxychlorination of3,5-xylenol based on the previous studies. And the researching works are as follows:At first, study the effects of oxychlorination systems(MX, hydrochloric acid, and CuCl2) by different oxidants to find the most efficient.Then, test the effect of different reaction conditions include reaction temperature, reactant ratios, on reaction result s.At last, analyze the reaction mechanism and kinetics factors of the oxychlorination system.Through the studies, we found that a relative high selectivity of PCMX could be met, when CuCl2used20%of MX(wt%,), and hydrochloric acid1.1of MX(mol), at95℃. And the selectivity of PCMX is95.47%, and the by-product, such as2-chloro-3,5-xylenol(OCMX) and2,4-dichloro-3,5-xylenol(DCMX) have been suppressed to3.04%and1.45%, respectively.
