In the past decades, the rational design and synthesis of coordination polymers have currently attracted ever-increasing attention not only due to their charming topologies and intriguing aesthetic structures but also for their promising applications in the areas of magnetic, optical, gas and hydrocarbon separation and storage, catalytic, and sensors. Generally, the formation of coordination polymers is influenced by many factors such as solvent, organic ligands, metal ion, counterion, and ratio of reactants. Of all these, the selection of proper organic ligands is one of the most important factors. The flexibility, steric effects, and length will lead in diverse structures of coordination polymers. Aromatic multicarboxylate ligand is to construct the ideal member of the coordination polymers owing to carboxylic groups have abundant coordination modes and strong bridging ability. In this article, a new rigid and symmetric ligand,2’,5’-dimethyl-1,1’:4’,1"-teiphenyl-3,3" dicarboxylic acid (H2L), is selected as the main ligand. Twelve coordination polymers, namely,[Mn0.5(L)0.5(BIBP)-(H20)3]-(H2L)0.5-2DMF-H20(l)[Mn2(L)2(DMF)-(H2O)]-DMF (2),[Mn(L)(BIP)2]-H2O (3),[Mn3(L)3(phen)2](4),[Zn(L)-(H2O)]-2H2O (5),[Cd(L)2(BIP)](6),[Cd3(L)3(phen)2](7),[Zn3(L)3(phen)2](8),[Cd(L)(BIBP)]-l/2DMF-3/2H2O (9),[Zn(L)(4,4’-bipy)05-H2O](10),[Zn(L)(3,5-BIPY)]-DMF-3H2O (11) and [Cd2(L)2(l,3-BIP)2]-2DMF-2H2O (12), have been synthesized with H2L ligand, different N-containing auxiliary ligands and transition metal ions. Complexes1,6and11with an infinite ID chain structure;2with non-interpenetrating3D frameworks based on rod-shaped SBUs;3and9with3-fold interpenetrating3D frameworks;4,7, and8with non-interpenetrating3D frameworks based on trinuclear SBUs;5,110, and12with a2D layer frameworks. All complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, IR spectroscopy, XRPD analysis, elemental analysis and thermal analysis. In addition, the magnetic of complexes2-4have also been tested and investigated,2-4show different antiferromagnetic; photo luminescent properties of complexes5-12were studied in the solid state at room temperature.
