Tension compensation device is an important part of railway contact line which is about to keep the tension constant when the temperature changes. Its performance will directly affect elasticity and standard state of the catenary. It has important significance for reducing railway malfunction as well as the stride development of China’s railway. Plane scroll spring is the key component of the widely used constant tension spring compensator which has a great potential to develop. High-performance scroll spring can ensure the compensation accuracy and a longer service life.The research on stress value, stress distribution and fatigue life of scroll spring is a complex process, which contains simulation, test, information collection, data processing and so on. With the development of the finite element analysis method, using the computer to solve this problem has become a reality. This paper is based on the research object of high-performance plane scroll spring, research content involves:1. Different types of scroll spring are studied theoretically to have a better understanding of its basic structure and features. Based on the calculation method of the deformation and stiffness that applies for the non-contact and contact-shaped scroll spring, so can figure out the theoretical foundation and analytical tools which best suit for the object in this paper.2. A three-dimensional model of the plane scroll spring is established, then using ABAQUS finite element software as an analysis tool to set meshing, contact condition and apply load etc. Focus mainly on contact condition of the model. In the premise of ensuring the convergence of the calculation, scroll spring static finite element is analyzed. So to obtain overall stress distribution of scroll spring and the stress changes in various working conditions.3. An introduction of the methods and purposes of the scroll spring testing. By means of tensile experiments can get the elastic modulus and other performance parameters of it. The results of the overall test show the static stress and residual stress distribution. Then calculating the actual working stress and the test data can be used to verify the reliability of the finite element analysis.4. Understand the theory of fatigue strength and fatigue life, grasp the factors affecting the fatigue strength and find ways to improve strength. Make fracture analysis to the lapsed vortex spring material. On the basis of fatigue test of the scroll spring, infinite and finite life design is used.5. A brief summary of the research contents and the prospection of the application space of the scroll spring compensation device. Finally make recommendations on further analysis of the scroll spring.
